About the Châteaux and Our Program

An information packet about the Béarn region in the southwest of France, where our SummerStage 2010 will be taking place, is available at Ecole Koenig, including information on lodgings if you wish to join us for the performances.

The Château de Gassion in Audaux serves as dormitories for the Fondation d’Auteuil during the year and therefore meets all of the requirements for lodging children. When we visited, we immediately recognized it as a marvelous setting. The necessary adjustments to provide security and modern comforts take nothing away from its charm. The rooms are simple, with two or four bunk-beds and there are bathrooms and showers on each floor. Everything is very clean!

The Château de Gassion in Audaux is situated in the heart of a 17-acre park, equipped for sports activities (basketball court, games, etc)

The Château de Laàs, its open-air theater and its orange orchard are at our disposition for afternoon group rehearsals. Laàs is 6 kilometers from Audaux and the two towns are joined by a small country road. Joan rode her bike from one town to the next and the route only took her 20 minutes…the “traffic” being defined by a tractor or two, with lots of cows and horses along the way! For the children who do not like to bicycle, we are renting a 9-seat mini-van for some of the local trips.

The participating teachers include Joan Koenig, Betsy Schlesinger, Lionel Boccara, James Dempsey, and Darcy Smith. Depending upon enrollments, a violin teacher may also be attending.
